The Moonstone illustrated

The Moonstone (1868) by Wilkie Collins is a 19th-century British epistolary novel. It is generally considered to be the first detective novel, and it established many of the ground rules of the modern detective novel. The story was originally serialised in Charles Dickens's magazine All the Year Round. The Moonstone and The Woman in White are widely considered to be Collins's best novels, and Collins adapted The Moonstone for the stage in 1877, although the play was performed for only two months.

Go ahead and yawn; you will not miss anything. Illustrations distract from the mystery.

I understood that The Moonstone is a classic, so I decided to read it to be culturally literate. Well, the storyline may be interesting, but the writing is atrocious. It is clunky, bloated, and seemingly pointless. The characters just keep rattling. A lot of writers fill in the story with descriptions of time and place to give an atmosphere to the story. This writer (Wilkie Collins) just fills it with unrelated trivia. Occasionally, I would go back a few pages to see what I must have missed. When I read again, there was nothing there to miss. Either Wilkie is extremely monotonous or other writing from this period is, and I am just now lucky enough to find out. I talked to others about this, and they said, "Now you know why Sherlock Holmes is so popular" (as an alternative, which is much better written).
