Jack Harlan was a marshal. He had been a lawman all his life. He had brought in most of the Ceres syndicate all on his own, and was celebrated for it. But now he needed a break. So, he took a post as Marshal on Moonbase Alpha. It was not like the Mars colony or any of the ice mines in the Belt. It was quiet. All that happened here was Helium-3 mining. It was profitable, but there was none of the excitement of the farther colonies. They jumped with the appeal of prostitution, bootlegging and drug trafficking. Not the Moon. The Moon was a good place for a lawman to retire, minus a few bar fights or Helium-3 smuggling. His new career path had not counted on a wiseguy hiding out from a prison sentence on Earth. Or a hot Lieutenant who liked what she saw when Jack showed up. He had certainly not counted on a human trafficking ring operating right under their noses. Retirement might have to wait a bit before he kicked up his feet.
