M onkeys are intelligent, highly adaptable mammals belonging to the order Primates, the same biological group that includes apes, lemurs, and humans. They are known for their agility, social behavior, curiosity, and remarkable problem-solving abilities. Found primarily in tropical and subtropical regions of the world, monkeys have evolved to thrive in a wide range of environments, from dense rainforests and mountainous regions to savannas and riverbanks. In scientific terms, monkeys are generally divided into two broad groups: New World monkeys, which live in Central and South America, and Old World monkeys, which are found in Africa and Asia. Although these two groups share common ancestors, millions of years of evolution have resulted in noticeable differences in anatomy, behavior, and lifestyle. Monkeys typically possess flexible limbs, grasping hands and feet, forwardfacing eyes that allow depth perception, and relatively large brains compared to body size. These features make them excellent climbers and skilled foragers. Most species spend much of their lives in trees, although some live partially or fully on the ground. One of the defining features of most monkeys is the presence of a tail.
