The Mongrel Within
Life rarely follows the paths we imagine for ourselves. It bends, breaks, reshapes, and reforms us, sometimes slowly, sometimes in a single catastrophic moment. This is a story about that reshaping. The story of a man born into instability, trained by hardship, saved by connection, and shattered by unimaginable loss.
Steve's journey is not one of clean lines or heroic triumphs. It is a story of survival, of the makeshift armour we build in childhood and carry with us into adulthood, even when it no longer fits. It is a story about identity formed in violence yet tethered to hope; about the scaffolding that love builds; and about what remains when that scaffolding is suddenly taken away.
This book explores the quiet truths that many people carry but seldom speak. Truths that trauma can be both a burden and a teacher; that purpose can be both salvation and obsession; and that grief does not simply wound, it transforms. Steve's life shows us how easily a person can fall into darkness, how quietly depression settles into the corners of a home, and how rage can become both compass and curse. It exemplifies how all behaviours and responses serve a purpose, including the tools we use to survive.
This is not a story about perfection. It is a story about being human. About how we learn, how we cope, how we break, and how we rise. Even if what rises is not what we once were.
This is a work of fiction; a psychological revenge thriller blended with drama and martial-arts-driven crime fiction.
As a psychologist, I wrote this book not simply to tell Steve's story, but to honour the unseen battles many people fight behind closed doors. If you find echoes of your own experiences here, know that you are not alone. There are people and organisations available to assist.
