Mister Monarch

Fred Urquhart's work with the Monarch Butterfly is a classic study which has led to to the vast intrest by many people, including numbers of classrooms of young children who delight in the rearing of this fantastic insect and Monarch Watch's (Univ. of Kansas) tagging of the Monarch. This is not a book replete with color photos and simplist descriptions that would be enjoyed by the novice enthusiast, however, for one who is interested in learning more this book is a must have. (Dr. Urquahart's origin book on the Monarch was published approximately 40 years ago and is a bona fida collector's item.)

A classic!

Anyone wishing to study the migration of the monarch butterfly would do well to start with this volume. Urquhart's work, though dated, is a classic of scientific research and led to the discovery of the Mexican wintering grounds in 1978. The life cycle and metamorphosis of the butterflies is covered in detail, as are methods of raising monarchs, at home or in the classroom. Later researchers have built on his work but not superseded it.
