This research explores the consequences of mobile phone use for the individual and examines the process by which the phone has become a personal medium. In reconstructing the symbolic significance of this 'constant companion', the study incorporates cultural-theoretical perspectives and examines the psychological aspects against the backdrop of individualisation and globalisation. In everyday use, the device plays a key role in maintaining personal relationships. Its taken-for-granted use highlights a growing psychological need to reinforce one's own identity through the pursuit of increased attention. Within the context of flexible and de-standardised lifestyles, there is a discernible increased willingness to disclose and present private and personal matters publicly.
