Harpagon, the most desperate, scheming miser in literature, starves his servants, declines to pay them, cheats his own children if he can save (or make) a few coins, and when his hoard of gold disappears, insanely accuses himself of being the thief. Dandin, in this rousing classic, not previously available in English for sixty years, is a man in a plight that everybody but him will find entertaining.
You can't go wrong with Albert Bermel when selecting an adaptation/translation of Moliere. This is strong, sturdy, PLAYABLE, American Moliere. Audiences will get every nuance, every inference, every joke, and will leave your theatre feeling they've experienced the "real deal." There's nothing "fussy" or "precious" about Bermel's work (unlike the vaunted Richard Wilbur translations that leave me cold) and they're much more accessible to American ears and sensibilities than are Miles Malleson's fine British adaptations. This "Miser" is a HOOT from the get-go.
