In the south of France there is a tiny town called Saintes Maries de la Mer. Inside the town church is a wooden boat . . . with two wooden ladies--one in a rose dress and one in blue. Both are called Marie. Traveling in their modest wooden boat, the mysterious two Saint Maries are said to have performed forty miracles during the 19th century. But who were these two saints? Inspired by this question, Rosemary Wells crafts a vivid portrayal of the saints as sixteen-year-old friends drifting through the skies in their boat, meeting with God himself, and swooping down to Earth to perform loving good deeds. Award-winning illustrator Petra Mathers' whimsical illustrations top off this enchantingly unique picture book.
The power of God, the generosity of friends, the gratitude of the afflicted: it's all here, plus local color too! This book delighted us all and it brought a bit of the Catholic culture of France into our home. Two young friends, both "Maries", help friends in need from heaven. The story is creatively told in their point of view and the illustrations are so cute.
Great story of heroines

I took this book out of the library. The illustration is beautiful and the story is captivating. It is the behind the scenes story of two saints told in a simple way that kids can easily understand. It reads like an adventure book. One small quibble is that because of the death component I'd wait until age 6 unless the kid has experienced death.
