Janet and Edward are happy to return to Doveby Dale. Neither is interested in continuing to work with the agency while Mr. Brown is still in charge. The carriage house project has been completed, and they are both happy to spend some time settling into their new home.
Things don't go to plan, though. Within days of their return to Doveby Dale, they get invited to a party at the country estate where Mr. Jones has been staying while he's on a leave of absence from the agency. A weekend in the country sounds enjoyable enough, but Janet and Edward haven't been in Parton-on-Trent for long before they stumble across a dead body.
One of Mr. Jones's houseguests has been murdered. Mr. Jones is convinced that Mr. Brown is behind the murder, but Brown has an unbreakable alibi. While Janet and Edward are reluctant to get involved in a murder investigation, it quickly becomes obvious that if they don't find the killer, Mr. Jones is going to be blamed for Adam Miles's untimely death.
