"The more commonplace a person is, the more will his language bear the stamp of the community in which he lives" (Jespersen, 1946: 183). In this piece of work I intend to find a reasonable phonemic system to the Midlands (in England) represented by Yorkshire, and the city of Leeds' accent, as a model, and the various ways and factors tending towards R.P. I lived with the people of this city for about nine months, mixed with them, watched their way of speaking and, to some extent became able to distinguish their local sounds and predict the underlying motivation of those sounds, and surface representation in comparison to their R.P. equivalents.
