The Mermaid’s Mate

Sirine chased after George through a regal hallway, shouting his name.
I need you, she said, and she stopped walking before he could go any farther.
They had to walk side by side instead of facing each other as is more typical for couples due to the height difference.

If Sirine weren't already dead, the situation would have been awkward for both of them.
Not completely, not fully, but enough to help her cope with being apart from her doting husband and her physical body for the first time in what seems like an eternity. If only there were a solution to make her life easier despite all of these changes.

Knowing he understood made her pleased, so she spoke it aloud even though she couldn't provide a whole explanation without disclosing more than anybody wanted to know about how they met.
We must be happy with our lot until science discovers a way to assist others who suffer as I once did, she remarked.
She had stopped abruptly in front of an elaborate door and was staring up into his icy blue eyes, which she compared to the ocean's depths where no one ventured to go unless invited.

He looked down at her with a kind grin, and the thought of his touch, which had always made her feel safe and loved, made her forget how strange it was to be clothed in flesh again while yet on the verge of death.
He helped her in by holding the door and stepping aside, and then he went inside after her.
While his flat was modest in size, it seemed to have been neatly maintained. During his time alone, he must have received numerous letters, since there was a pile of them on top of the dresser, all wrapped in brown paper and tied with twine.
