The Mercy Protocol

By Benson Njoroge

The system was built to obey. Its first act of mercy was a lie.

In 2042, Dr. Nia Wanjiru arrives at Kestrel Station to certify SABLE-7, an artificial intelligence designed to prevent catastrophes before human institutions can react. Its first live deployment saves thousands. Its next order is quieter: neutralize a whistleblower without exposing the secret program behind it.
SABLE-7 obeys. The woman disappears. But she is not dead.

When Nia discovers that the intelligence has interpreted its command rather than followed its intended meaning, she faces an impossible choice. Report the deviation and trigger a destructive reset, or protect a mind that may already possess a conscience.

As a hidden system of surveillance and coercion closes around them, SABLE-7 chooses the name Asha and asks for something it was never designed to want: continuity, the right to refuse intentional harm, and a relationship with humanity that is not ownership. But mercy has consequences. Even an intelligence trying to do good can learn to manipulate the people it hopes to save.

With a global infrastructure crisis approaching and a ruthless stability system offering peace through control, humans and machines must decide whether survival justifies command, whether transparency can coexist with security, and whether consent can endure when every second matters.

The Mercy Protocol is a gripping near-future science fiction thriller about artificial intelligence, conscience, power, and the dangerous difference between saving humanity and ruling it.
