a throughly enjoyable Military Regency......

This was the first book I've read by this author and I can see that she's very talented. Sadly, I see her last book was a Contemporary, but I hope she decides to write more Regencies in the future. The Mercenary Major tells the story of Jack Amberly-a Englishman with a unusual background as he was raised in Spain-a product of a titled mother who was outcast from her family for marrying "beneath her". In the book we learn that Jack was orphaned at 12 a had to fend for himself. He joined the English Army, excelled in it, and was found by a maiden Aunt, who called him home to England. He then meets Victoria-a great, no nonsense heroine who is equally beautiful, clever, and cautious. She's unsure if Jack really is who his Aunt thinks or an impostor, but she knows she cannot deny the attraction she feels for him from the start. From there we have a interesting, adventurous, romantic, and slightly sensuous tale that was a great change of pace from your usual "flighty miss" and "rake" storyline.. The secondary characters are outstanding as well. I highly recommend this book to other Regency Romance fans. 4.5 stars.

Fun and well-done

Frankly, this book was fun to read from beginning to end. The heroine, Victoria, is determined to save her neighbor's aunt from an imposter claiming to be the aunt's nephew. But the more Victoria gets to know Jack, the more she doesn't care who he pretends to be as she falls in love with him.The characters here are very likeable. The hero and heroine actually LIKE each other and complement each other well. And the plot keeps moving and forward action. My one criticism is that Ms. Moore uses historical facts of spy plots and uprisings in London without giving us enough background to figure out what is going on (actually, there seems to be a conspiracy theory presented that is never explained).Overall, fun reading--recommended!
