The Mentoring, Coaching, and Leadership Development (MARKETPLACE) Workbook, written by Dr. Paul Leavenworth, is designed to give marketplace leaders and Christ-followers a "pathway" to greater understanding and effectiveness in being a compassionate listener. Over the past several years, I have worked more and more with "marketplace leaders" who may or may not call themselves followers of Christ but who are open to spirituality and want to gain insights and clarity into becoming better people and leaders. Many of these folks recognize a need for doing life and leadership in a new and kinder way. They have tended to be hard chargers, task-oriented, driven, and successful folks who have come to a point where they are stressed, stuck, and facing crises that they can't seem to solve using the skills and strategies that have served them in the past. Many of these folks have told me that they find the concept of compassionate listening and our training in mentoring, coaching, and leadership development to be very helpful.Compassionate listening can be defined as "caring enough about another person to really hear their story." This is often accomplished through asking one or all of these three questions:1.What is your story?2.What are your dreams?3.What step(s) can you take to move toward the fulfillment of your dream? These three questions have formed the basis of my mentor-coaching and the development of my Focused Life process. I have "done life together" with dozens of wonderful clients over the past several years but have only begun to train others in compassionate listening over the last few years.I have taught a graduate course at Grand View University (Des Moines, IA) - BSGR 574: Mentoring, Coaching, and Leadership Development for the past several years. Much of the content and methodology in this workbook has come from the curriculum I developed for this course and feedback from students and the coaches that are part of my coaching team in this course.Several other training events have emerged from this course (Introduction to Compassionate Listening, The Mentor-Coaching Seminar, and the Mentor-Coaching Skills Training). From these workshops we have developed a Certificate in Mentoring, Coaching, and Leadership Development and have recently become a Center at Grand View University. This workbook is formatted using the IDEA approach to discovery learning. In order to facilitate discovery learning, each chapter begins with an Introduction (I) followed by Discovery (D), Explanation (E), and Application (A) sections. The goal of the IDEA approach of discovery learning is two-fold: 1. To help you become a better version of yourself and 2. To help you become a better leader.
