The Menagerie is what passes for the ruling council of the galaxy, a galaxy known to some as Milky Way. It is made of groups of sentient (and incidentally paranoid) machines that have mostly evolved from biological ancestors and in many cases exterminated them. Two of these hyper-intelligent machines, one of mysterious descent and another evolved from gung-ho giant mantis shrimp-like animals, embark on a dangerous journey of exploration to Andromeda. What they find there shakes them and their travelling companions to the core and presents a host of problems for the savant machines running things to ponder.Ingo Furr is a programmer working at the Facility in Oxfordshire in England. He goes to a presentation on a novel kind of mathematics and decides to program his own neutral network on the new quantum clusters at the Facility. This turns out to be a life changing event as a chain of things not entirely of his making overtake him and most of humanity in a desperate struggle for survival.
