1936, Shreveport, LouisianaPretty young New Yorker Miriam Levenson finds herself here employed in the only job she can get - interviewing the elderly for the Roosevelt Administration's Federal Writers Project. Among the people she meets are an aging Civil War hero, a French Muralist and his common-law wife, and a ninety-five-year-old Irish immigrant named Bridget Fenerty, a woman who has known tragedy and refused to buckle under it. Winter turns to spring, and Miriam finds there are people in this town who have secrets. And as she is followed by a mysterious man in a black Cadillac, Miriam finds that she, too, has a secret.
Outstanding book! Love this author and his writing

You could say that this author specializes in writing fiction about Louisiana and New Orleans from around the time of the Civil War to 1940s--depending on the book. But that might be simplifying it. This is one of my favorites of his books and I enjoyed them all. A WPA paid Jewish girl takes a job in Shreveport interviewing people to get the stories of their lives. Her main subject that she interviews is an Irish lady who is very old---and the stories go from the time leaving Ireland , arriving in New Orleans, life there and so on. C.H. Lawler uses actual events that happened to fictional stories about the Irish lady's life. It was so well written, I thought it was actual stories in this lady's life! I cannot recommend it highly enough.
The Memory of Time took me through a rollercoaster of emotions and made me shed several tears.

Though it started out slowly, it quickly turned into a wonderful read. The way it is written is different and compelling. The stories will make you laugh and cry. The characters will feel as though you’ve known them all your life. If you’re looking for a book, a story, people to connect to, this is the book to read! This is a tie for my favorite book.
