Believe it or not, this is the autobiography of an African bull elephant, told mostly in his own voice. Ishi's story begins when he is two, and is the sole survivor and witness to the violent massacre of his mother and entire herd. He is rescued and raised for a time within a wild animal orphanage. Although he is loved and well cared for, he yearns to roam the wild plains and forests with his own kind.
Through the next 50 years, he joins and then loses several elephant herds, becoming stronger and braver, and eventually a legend. At one point, one of his original well meaning rescuers, thinking he is saving his life again, captures him and sends him to a London zoo for a time. Eventually, Ishi is brought back to Africa to spend the rest of his days at a wildlife refuge.
There is still much life and longing left in this old bull. He escapes, and makes the nearly impossible journey to return to the land where he was born. This author truly gave a believable voice and a soul to these animals.
