In the city of Verath, memories are currency. The skilled-the Renders-can extract moments from a person's mind and preserve them in glass vials: to be sold, traded, or drunk by those desperate enough to live someone else's experience.

Sable Noor is one of the best. A disgraced Render working the illegal Silt district, she extracts memories for clients who demand answers: did my partner cheat? Did my business associate lie? Did my lover ever truly love me? She asks no questions about how the memories will be used. She simply finds them, clean and complete, and walks away with her payment.

But when a routine job draws her into the God's Quarter-a district so old that the city itself seems to forget where it ends-everything changes. Sable discovers that someone, or something, is rendering the very city itself. Streets are disappearing. Landmarks are erased from existence. And the memories she extracted might be the only evidence that these places ever existed at all.

As Sable searches for the source of the erasure, she begins to understand that she hasn't been extracting memories. She's been participating in something far more devastating: the selective rewriting of a city's history. And the woman responsible for all of it may be the one staring back at her in the mirror.
