The star-liner Delta Destiny, en route to the pageant world of Tintagel, is translocated to a remote corner the galaxy when its star drive catastrophically malfunctions. The McLaren family struggle to survive aboard the derelict ship as the 200,000 passengers and crew descend into barbarism. ServiceNet, the Delta Destiny's sentient AI unit, recognises the seven stages of Social Evolution: Survival - Tribal - Empire - Authoritarian - Enterprise - Community - Integral. It knows that transitions take place where life conditions undergo a major change and are accompanied by destructive chaos. Societies can move in either direction. It also realises that its own thought processes are dominated by the science & technology of the Enterprise worldview, and it will have to gather data on human behaviour in a crisis situation in order to build a viable survival plan.Meanwhile, the ships crew, the space marine security forces and the History Planet Corporation staff manoeuvre for positions of power. But on the outer decks the genetically modified Taurs of the Terraform Squad have their own survival plan.
