we grow as people when we are challenged as readers

Obviously, this book will make some people uncomfortable. Any book that doesn't make you a little uncomfortable is probably trying to sell you something, namely itself. Those that do though, can be the most rewarding books that you are ever likely to read: for instance, The Catcher in the Rye; To Kill a Mockingbird; Huckleberry Finn. If these books were banned because a few people's feathers got ruffled, or ignored the pleasure discovered within these beautiful books because they were afraid of them, what a terrible shame it would be for those of us who enjoy reading not just for entertainment but to remind us of our dreams, and how to live them into being. If you prefer not being reminded about the bad things that go on in your own community, or about the evil which otherwise good people perpetrate, this book is not for you. On the other hand, if you prefer to be challenged by what you read, and like your writers ambitious and unafraid to take on the most serious topics confronting the world today -- and even if you don't -- then Bernie MacKinnon's Meantime might have been written for you. We grow as people when we are challenged, to think for ourselves, as readers.
