The family surname of Mays has a lineage going back to the year of 1784 when Edward Mays was born in Ballinderry, County Antrim in present day Northern Ireland. There are several recorded spellings of the surname including Mays, Mayes, Mayze and Meys. The current branch of the surname dates to Edward Mays (1784-1872) who at a young age enlisted in the Eighth or The King's Regiment of Foot in the British Army in 1804.
