In the late 1800s at the St. Chrischona Seminary near Basel, Switzerland, two young men became friends. The young seminarians, Robert Maurer and Fritz Muerdter, each married and then immigrated at different times to the United States. The Muerdters ended up in El Paso, Texas, and the Maurers settled in Chino, California. They lost touch for 25 years but when they finally rediscovered each other they visited each other as often as possible. Two of the children, Kurt Muerdter and Clara Maurer, fell in love and married. This memoir recounts the histories of each family's experiences in the United States and focuses on the life that Kurt and Clara built together during their nearly six decades of marriage.
