The Master's Apprentice (The Echo Chamber Universe)

By Alan Miller

A Short Story

The Master's Apprentice is a deeply poignant, science fiction short story set within the Echo Chamber Universe.

Leo Benjamin is a brilliant modern writer trapped in a devastating paradox: his prose is mechanically flawless, but completely invisible within the suffocating noise of the twenty-first-century digital void. Desperate to discover how the literary giants of old captured the hearts of millions with nothing but ink and paper, Leo utilizes the Echo Chamber to travel back to the fog-choked streets of 1893 England. His target: a young, broke, and dangerously ill H.G. Wells.

Over a series of episodic, secret journeys spanning four years, Leo embeds himself as a trusted companion to Wells during the composition of his most iconic works: The Time Machine, The Island of Doctor Moreau, The Invisible Man, and The War of the Worlds. But as Leo subtly anchors his fading hero through crippling slumps of burnout and creative paralysis, an unspoken, thrilling game of deduction unfolds between them. Blending rich biographical accuracy with an intimate exploration of the artistic soul, the story builds to a beautiful, full-circle temporal loop, proving that a true master's greatest gift is teaching his apprentice how to finally be seen.
