The Martian's Black Box

Sixty-five million years ago, Martian astronomers discovered that the third planet from the sun was in the direct path of a giant asteroid and the collision would occur in less than one Earth year. Being an event of scientific interest, Martian scientists traveled to Earth to place data collection instrumentation at various locations to record the impact and its aftermath. The mission was successful but marred when one of the space travelers was attacked and devoured by a large predatory animal living on Earth at that time. The small monitor and communication device worn by the Martian signaled his death to the others, and shortly afterward, the beast died in a massive landslide. A paleontology team working in the Badlands of Montana discovered the fossil, including a mysterious bone that resembled part of a human skull cap and a small black box. A government coverup and the search by foreign and domestic agents for the Martian's black box ensued.
