The Marginalia Covenant

By Matthew Petchinsky

Hidden beneath a centuries-old university library lies a secret no catalogue records.

When graduate student Elias Ward discovers handwritten annotations in rare books that respond to his thoughts, he believes he has uncovered an academic anomaly. Instead, he has drawn the attention of the Marginalia Covenant-a clandestine society that believes reality itself can be altered through footnotes, annotations, and the forgotten margins of history.

As Elias is pulled into the Silent Floors beneath the library, he learns that the Covenant has quietly shaped events for centuries, editing outcomes rather than rewriting facts. But when a forbidden manuscript marks Elias as a "correctable variable," he realizes the greatest danger is not death-but erasure. To be revised, simplified, or absorbed into the text is to lose authorship of one's own life.

Blending dark academia, occult mystery, and literary thriller, The Marginalia Covenant explores who controls meaning, who decides truth, and what happens when the act of reading becomes an act of power. Eerie, cerebral, and unsettling, this novel asks a haunting question: if reality is a text, what happens when it starts reading you back?
