It's the summer of the magnificent marching band, and folks in the small Minnesota town of Lincolnia seem to be lost in their dreams. Lillian Brickles bakes the best brownies in town, knows her film... This description may be from another edition of this product.
This book is great - Think "Field of Dreams" meets "Music Man"- from an 11-year-old boy's perspective! Wonderfully written characters hook you early and keep you wanting to read "one more page" as you anxiously await what happens next! The author has created wonderful characters that will keep you smiling and occasionally shedding a tear. This would make a great movie you could take your kids to and someone would be smart to snap it up.
Sousa and the Spirit of American Music
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 22 years ago
John Philip Sousa's ghost hovers over a small Minnesota town, inspiring a crabbed old man and an indefatigable 11-year old boy to turn a shattered old dream into a life-changing work of musical art. It's impossible not to be captivated by the nicely developed characters. An engaging and wholesome "what I did last summer" kind of story where you have to care about what happens to the characters as they grow through the story. This first novel testifies to the power and nobility of music to heal ancient quarrels and unite communities. And the conclusion is satisfying - something many authors seem determined to deny their readers. The book is not "political," yet a well crafted tale about the spirit of Sousa and a town called "Lincolnia" almost can't help showing the humor and decent nature of Americans, especially in small towns.

MARCH OF THE FIREFLIES is one of those books that just makes you feel plain good. It is a great Midwestern story; there is a Henry North in all of us. The small town characters where a joy and I couldn't wait to meet the next one.

This extremely enjoyable book and its universal message is must reading for all small town Midwesterners, baseball fans, and former 11-year-olds. I concede that it is probably unsuitable for most anyone else.
Best book for family entertainment

After reading Eric Felton's charming book, I can only say that it wasn't long enough. The characters are so true to life that I found myself thinking about them when I wasn't reading the book. I was either laughing or teary-eyed throughout the story. Mr. Felton brings to life everyday experiences that each of us can relate to. This is a very touching story for all ages. I highly recommend "The March of the Fireflies," for good reading. I'm looking forward to a sequel, and I'm hoping someone will see that it has great potential to become a musical, movie, or series for television.
