This work photographically documents the impressive breadth of variability in the bark of native red maple (Acer rubrum), recognizing similarities and differences and categorizing the different bark patterns. An overview of general patterning is provided, and the presentation of bark types begins with those that are common and with those that are smooth to provide starting points from which to build upon with the many variations. Patterns that are considered peculiar or even unique are recognized, and visual similarities to other tree species are informally noted. Other trunk characteristics are presented, and a section on caricature-like trunks adds a light-hearted touch. The book begins with images of brilliant spring flowers and closes with images of vibrant autumn foliage to further highlight the beauty of the tree.
