The man in the portrait

A young newspaper reporter for the Boston Globe stopped in at an antique shop while visiting a friend on Cape Cod. Just as he was about to leave empty- handed, he was drawn to a dust covered small portrait lying on the floor partially covered by larger picture. He stops as he is leaving and picks it up. A strange feeling comes over him as he looks into the face of the man in the picture. He sees himself. Dressed in a suit of the 1800's, sitting in a chair with a large dog looking up at him from his side and another lying at his feet. He got the feeling he knew this man. He also got the feeling the man was reaching out to him for some kind of help. He left the shop with the small portrait under his arm wrapped with parchment paper and tied with a string
