Franciscan Friar Father Feeds Millions

Alfred Boeddeker saw the equivalent of five loaves and two fishes multiplied many times over through the ministry and miracle of the St. Anthony Dining Room in San Francisco. This is the story of a man who brought dignity, meaning, and hope to hurting people in San Francisco. He faithfully followed his calling in a ministry of over 50 years. The San Francisco Dining Room led to extensions of ministry world wide. The farm ministry that grew out of need to provide jobs and meaning to those ministered to through the dining room. One feature of the farm was the raising of hogs for meat for the San Francisco operation. I was reminded of the story of the prodigal returning home after a season of living with the hogs. This is a story of lives turned around. It is a story of rebuilding and successes of those who returned to family and home. It is a story of men and women contributing anew to community and society. The author fills page after page with stories of miracles detailing the life of Alfred Boeddeker. This is a story that should be read by Catholics, Protestants and Non Sectarians alike. It is a book that should be in High School and Public libraries. It should be required reading for the politician, the philanthropist, and the pauper. This is a highly motivating example of a man who lived with and fulfilled a high calling and purpose.

The Man Behind The Miracle

In "The Man Behind The Miracle" we read about an ordinary person who did extraordinary things. Father Alfred Boeddeker, O.F.M. did what most good people only dream of doing. He fed the hungry and took care of the sick by founding the St. Anthony Dining Room and the St. Anthony Clinic. His whole life was dedicated to serving his fellow man and he enriched thousands of lives. All that he did was done with simplicity, respect and, above all, with humor. I recommend this book to those cynics who have lost faith with humanity, to those stout hearted souls who believe in the goodness of man and to young people who need to know that miracles can happen.

The Man Behind the Miracle/my uncle

Father Alfred was my Mother's big brother. When he planned some of his ventures, he would come to our house and talk about it, As I was growing up I was accustomed to lisening to the dreams, and then to see them come to life. I do believe that young people should read this book, because it tells them that they too can do great things in the world. Anyone can if they really want to and have enough Faith. He was a real inspiration to me and to my brothers and sisters, and we are grateful that he was our uncle.

Miracles Still Happen

Father Alfred Boeddeker, O.F.M., was almost 50 when he took on the greatest undertaking of his life. Named pastor of St. Boniface Catholic Church in San Francisco's Tenderloin District, he went beyond ministering only to the local residents, downtown business people and shoppers. Fr. Alfred extended his ministry "to care passionately for the poor, the sick. the homeless, the hungry, the unloved, the forgotten." He did this as founder of the St. Anthony Dining Room. Madeline Hartmann writes knowingly of the man, his formative years, his family, his education, and the charisms that nurtured his success. In this era, when role models and heroes are scarce, this biography of a modern day miracle worker was truly an inspiration. I highly recommend it, especially for young people, who may doubt that one individual can make a difference.

The Man Behind the Miracle

This is a true story about the Miracle of Jones Street in San Francisco. Father Alfred opened Saint Anthony's dining room for the poor of the tenderloin district in 1950. Today Saint Anthony Foundation has blossomed into one of the largest most comprehensive organizations of it's kind. It incorporates several buildings with living quarters for men and women, drug and alcohal rehab facilities, employment services, a clinic, warehouses of clothing and furniture, it even has a working dairy farm in Sonoma county. This book is the story of the man and the many little miracles that made this all happen. It is great reading for anyone who loves San Francisco and Saint Francis.
