This is a collection of memories from Chet's mountain cabin lovingly known as Chet's Shanty Shack! As a young man living in New York City, New Year's Eve was a very lonely time for me. I knew that there were celebrations going on in Times Square with large cheering crowds. However, it was not my thing to go there and celebrate. Traditionally, on every New Year's Eve, I would cross Central Park West, the street bordering Central Park and one block from my home on Columbus Avenue. I would then walk on the sidewalk along the park from 84th St. to Columbus Circle at 59th Street, and then walk back. When I looked up at the windows of the large buildings lining Central Park West I could see their windows all lit up with colorful Christmas lights and could see people inside dancing and celebrating. I could see their Christmas trees and remember my thoughts and feelings that someday New Year's Eve would be a very special day for me. This feeling persisted all through my young life and when I came to California, events occurred which turned these thoughts into a reality. This is my story.
