The story of the Madinaveitia family can be considered a microcosm of Spanish social history. During the early 20th Century they occupied a prominent position in Madrid 's intelligenzia. Many of them were professional medics and research chemists, connected to prominent figures, among others, Willstatter; Nobel laureate, Picasso, Sorolla; painter, Hemingway, Amerigo Castro; historian, Zubiri; philosopher and Weissenberg; pianist. The eruption of the Spanish Civil war shattered their pleasant existence and in company with many gifted Spaniards, the Madinaveitias scattered to England, the USA, France, Vienna and Mexico, never to return. What luck for the countries that welcomed them; what a disaster for Spain!
