When the sun had disappeared below the sea line, the colour of the ocean had changed from all the dazzling tints of the king-opal to a sombre coal-black hue, and myriads of stars were beginning to make their appearance in the sky, I turned my boat's head, and pulled towards the shore again. A great melancholy had settled upon me, a vague sense of some impending catastrophe, of which, try how I would, I found I could not rid myself. The first book in the Dr. Nikola series, "A Bid for Fortune", centered around the protagonist, Richard Hatteras, with the mysterious and villainous Dr. Nikola working in the shadows to steal a priceless artifact. In Dr. Nikola Returns the main character was Wilfred Bruce who was working with Dr. Nikola to unlock the secrets of the strange artifact. It was clearly the same Dr. Nikola but based on the new perspective he was presented as the protagonist of the story and it was clear he had some valiant traits despite some of the terrible crimes he committed in the first book. This time the main character is Gilbert Pennethorne, a decent man who has been terribly wronged. Dr Nikola is the master manipulator who pushes Pennethorne into an act of revenge. In fact, despite the fact that Pennethorne had already considered murder he's a highly ethical man who wouldn't have killed were he not manipulated so heavily. Wikipedia writes, "Dr. Nikola makes only a peripheral appearance in this novel." I'm not sure that statement is quite fair. He's certainly not the main character but he never has been.
