THE LOVES OF A SEAGULL Can anyone measure the limits of the Universe? Yes. The poet can, with imagination, reach the Zenith and the Nadir, these imaginary points in the Universe. Just as only a seagull can love the sea so fiercely, with its feathery waves, but also the partner of flight and the longing for the High, which it reaches by treading the air, treading the waves and soaring, in a cry of glory, inspired by the music of the waters. The author's resemblance to a seagull is due to his love for the sea and his beloved in equal measure: "I love the boundless sea / My soul is a little playful, / I fly now on the open sea / Because I am a seagull. // I'm proud above the sea / And I'm happy in my soul, / When the wind blows, / It carries me to my love. // That's how I've always been, / Above the sea I fly lightly, / But my soul is empty / Because I have a great longing in it. // And the one I love / I tell her in my thoughts, / That with her alone I wish / To rise to the stars" (I am a seagull). Sensuous and playful in equal measure, the poet says: "I like to play, to fly / Above the sea I love, / And here too I want to die, / But next to the lady I desire" (I am a seagull).
