I really enjoyed this book. I wasn't quite sure about it when I started, especially after reading some of the reviews on here, but I was pleasantly surprised at just how engrossing it was. It's definitely not an Anne Rice-style book- that's a good thing in my opinion, but I'm sure that some people will come into it expecting that and they'll be disappointed. The Lost gave me the creeps- it's the kind of book that makes you keep looking over your shoulder if you're alone in the house late at night. If you're looking for something different & you enjoy a good gothic, give this a try.
Oozes Atmosphere

I'm not sure what the others here were expecting. Perhaps Anne Rice or some such. I found 'The Lost' to be one of those 'I can't wait to get home from work and finish it' titles. When I did finish the book, laying on the couch at five A.M., I was actually frightened to get up and walk through the empty house, something that rarely happens to me with horror. Aycliffe is a master.
A gem of "literary horror."

This book belongs to two genres: horror and "literary novel." Those who expect a straight horror novel will be disappointed. It's a short, neat little book. Its atmospheric prose evokes that of another British "literary ghost story" writer: Robert Aickman. I visited Transylvania as a child in the 1970s, and seen Bucharest, and Aycliffe describes it well in this book.

i dont understand these people...this is NOT a vampire novel and never pretended to be one... ok, its set in the carpathian mountains..so what....its dark...dreary...depressing and atmospheric...in short..its one of the best ghost stories i have ever read...if you like true gothic mastery such as E.A.Poe, Byron..and even..dare i say it..Stoker...well you'll like this book..it is modern in its content and the use of journal entries and letters is similar to Stokers novel but is far more subtle...you know they are out there watching you...you just dont know when they are gonna attack...but hold on for the end scene....although i admit it is slightly predictable...its still chills you to the bone.. excellent..
AWESOME - - simply awesome!

I expcted little from this book - but got a LOT. The story is so intriguing. I love it when seemingly dull, ordinary folk get caught up in twisted events. And the girl! Mouth-watering in her allure - yet always with a hint of horrible danger. The evil presented here is intelligent for a change - quite refreshing! Highly recommended.
