Lemuria was a continent proposed in 1864 by zoologist Philip Sclater to have sunk beneath the Indian Ocean. The hypothesis was proposed as an explanation for the presence of lemur fossils in Madagascar and India but not in Africa or the Middle East. Founder of Theosophy "Helena Blavatsky" placed Lemuria in the 7 stage root race system of her most famous book "The Secret Doctrine." Perhaps the most notable theosophical writing on the subject of Lemuria was the 1904 work; "The Lost Lemuria" by William Scott-Elliot.
