It's trash.

Awful read. If you're going to try to pedal poorly written traditional conservative values masked as some sort of psuedo-feminism, at least make it interesting. Also felt pretty terfy. I'm a cis-woman and I dont think about babies or my womb half as much. Jeezusssss. Is that all that makes women, women? Sarah Penner? Our wombs? Periods? Babies? I kept waiting for a badass moment where an oppressed class of people would stand together but nahhhh.

Great book

I enjoyed the different perspectives in this book and having the story unfold. It was a page turner.

Insufferable

I'm so disappointed in this novel. I loved the concept so much that I bought it on a whim and I wish that a different author had come up with this idea; Penner's writing is so elementary and the entire story and the characters are so half-baked and shallow. This book is touted as a "feminist" story but it wouldn't pass the Bechdel test. 2/3 of the main characters are OBSESSED with pregnancy and most of the book revolves around that or the lovers that wronged them. The other main character is a 12 year old girl who is infantilized (talks about chasing butterflies and gorging on candy) but also has NO issue shopping for poison in an abandoned building or directly committing murder; oh but she is terrified of menstruation and ghosts. The author also must suffer from 'I'm not like other girls' disorder because she seems to think that reading historical novels or having interest in history is an extremely unique and quirky trait. She also thinks that someone can get into Cambridge just on desire alone. I think the concept was great but I think Penner needs a new career.

Incredibly exciting and mischievous

Addicted from page one. Characters were developed well and enjoyed jumping from past to present.

Pleasure

This book was a surprising find. Mysterious and satisfying. Goes back and forth between time periods, but one is never lost. Recipes provided!
