God chose to bless his people Israel through David and his heirs and made an eternal covenant with them (2 Samuel 7; Psalm 132). Psalm 110 is quoted in the book of Hebrews as looking beyond the human king to a new king, belonging to the line of David, but much more than that, a divine king as well.At all periods of Israel's history, there was a fundamental recognition that it is truly God who reigns in justice and righteousness, and who exercises sovereignty over the kingdoms of the world (Psalm 29, 93, 95, 96, 97).
