Nick Cleary wants to enter the seminary to become a priest, but his father wants him to go to law school and join his firm. Nick prays and asks the Lord to give him seven years and then he will enter the seminary. He wants to honor his earthly father, so he goes to law school and then joins his father's law firm. He meets a young female attorney, Lillian, at the law firm, and they become good friends. After four years in the firm his father comes to him and releases him to enter the seminary. He realizes that Nick has a calling. Two weeks before entering the seminary Lillian asks Nick to marry her. He didn't realize that she expected more than friendship in their relationship. He explains that in two weeks he will join the seminary to become a priest. She begs him for one night of lovemaking and then she will never ask him for anything else. Sixteen years later Lillian introduces their daughter, Nicol.
