The Long Way Around: A Whippoorwill Novel

By Sydney Skyler

Sometimes the longest journey isn't measured in miles. It's measured in the distance between running away and finally choosing to stay.

Fiona has built her life around movement.

She travels from town to town solving problems no one else can fix, arriving just long enough to restore order before disappearing again. Staying has always felt dangerous. Motion is safe. Motion means no one can leave you because you're already gone.

Then a wrong turn brings her to Whippoorwill.

She tells herself she'll only stop for coffee.

Instead she meets Vaughan-a woman who repairs what needs repairing, builds what matters, and never mistakes silence for absence. Vaughan doesn't chase. She doesn't demand explanations or promises. She simply makes space.

For someone who has spent a lifetime believing love always comes with conditions, that quiet certainty is far more unsettling than any goodbye.

As Fiona finds herself returning to the same streets, the same bakery, and the same open garage where Vaughan patiently works, she begins to question everything she has always believed about freedom, belonging, and what it means to choose a home instead of simply passing through.

But when leaving has become part of your identity, staying may be the bravest journey of all.

The Long Way Around is an emotionally rich, slow-burn sapphic romance about healing, found family, quiet acts of care, and discovering that the places worth loving never ask you to become someone else. It is Book Eight in the beloved Whippoorwill Series and can be enjoyed as a standalone, though readers will appreciate returning to the welcoming community of Whippoorwill.
