Upon its publication in 1976, The Long Tunnel became an instant classic. It's release in paperback includes a foreword describing the investigation into the deaths of 29 miners at the Upper Big Branch... This description may be from another edition of this product.
THE LONG TUNNEL; A COAL MINER'S JOURNAL By Meade Arble "This book is about the buried grandeur of men who are quite literally condemned to an industrial hell and emerge into daylight after crisis has passed, more aware of themselves and the blessed daylight than they were before. THE LONG TUNNEL is about heroes, and is superbly told, utterly truthful." James Dickey "Meade Arble's The Long Tunnel is one of the best books to come from an American publishing company in the last decade. He has done for coal mining what Erich Remarque did for warfare: he has told it like it is. THE LONG TUNNEL is a kind of industrial ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT." Harry M. Caudill "One of the best accounts we have had ... It is well written and gripping in its detailed descriptions. Arble is a good writer." The New York Times Book Review (Sunday) "This must be what they call a great read, the very best I've had in months and months. THE LONG TUNNEL is a magic book." D. Keith Mano National Review "Mr. Arble has capitalized on a single experience to provide a moving ... harrowing account .. a searing indictment of a harsh, dehumanizing line of labor." King Features Syndicate "Arble is a born journalist. THE LONG TUNNEL is a raw documentary that strips away romantic folklore and legend to expose the truth about the mines and the men who work them." The Hartford Courant "It succeeds in conveying the benumbing reality of the coal miner's lot - an important corner of American reality ... No one who reads it will be able to think enthusiastically (about) better exploiting American coal." Book World (Book-of-the-Month Club News) "Arble is a fine writer and this s a fascinating, gut-wrenching account." The Philadelphia Bulletin "A superb account" "A fine book." This is an outstanding book, not only because it's a true picture of a coal miner's life, but because Arble is a terrific writer. You actually get into his family and into the wet, dark shafts where cave-ins happen almost every day. He brings Appalachia to life like no other book I've every read.
