This is a guide to London's distinctive Blue Plaques that commemorate the remarkable men and women who have lived in the capital. Its biographical portraits, listed in alphabetical order, provide informative and sometimes irreverent anecdotes about many of the famous and some not-so-famous lives. The careers of more then 700 individuals are provided--including well-known names such as Charles Dickens, Karl Marx, Jimi Hendrix, and Florence Nightingale--as well as fascinating accounts of the antics and achievements of less familiar figures whose lives have also been commemorated by a Blue Plaque. The text includes maps showing the location of plaques in Central London, indexes by area and profession, and illustrations of some of the most remarkable individuals.
Whenever I walk around London I always notice the Blue Plaques on buildings and have been surprised to stumble on former residences of everyone from George Orwell to Jimi Hendrix. I picked this book up to satisfy my curiosity around how many of these Blue Plaques are out there and who else is represented. It's a nice little volume with all of the Plaques listed alphabetically with locations and a short bio of the featured historical person represented. In a city as old and as large as London it is quite a collection of characters. The book also contains maps and an index of the people by profession.
