This is the candid, witty diary Dorothea Balano kept of her travels aboard a Maine schooner that plied the trade routes from Maine to Puerto Rico in the early decades of this century. This description may be from another edition of this product.
What makes this book classic is not only Dora's experiences while sailing on board the Hopkins. It is taking history, word for word, and placing it down nearly a century later. The human factor, the "norm" of the day, the context of cultures measured against our own are most interesting. Like other books of this kind, Dora takes us back to a 1911/12 reality and makes the soul search itself for it's own place in today's seafaring world.

This book is the actual log of a young woman who met and married a Maine sea captain and sailed around the world with him c.1911 on a schooner. The story of how they met makes it worth reading, let alone all the adventures and characters she describes so colorfully and humorously. I think she must have been a delightful person to know,. and she speaks with a surprisingly contemporary voice. The only thing that bothered me about this book is that while she wrote the journal, her name isn't even printed on the cover! Only her son's name, and he was the editor. Go figure!
