"...are you the one who's really living?" Jason Clarke lives a perfect life. Like everyone else in the Mars city of New Chicago, he is perfectly built, does not age, and has every possible desire catered to him through his EOS (Emotional Operating System). The grandson of Reginald Clarke, leader of the original Mars colony and now chief of Clarke Industries, Jason spends most of his days designing virtual scenery reminiscent of planet Earth, which was flooded by melted ice caps over 150 years ago. After Reginald and Jason's father, Daniel, put him in charge of Clarke Headquarters, Jason surveys the inner workings of the city and meets Sarah, a mysterious woman who looks and acts like no other person he has ever encountered. He notices white streaks in her hair, freckles on her skin, and extra weight around her waist. She also laughs and cries, emotions that Jason had only seen displayed on old recordings from his EOS. Soon, he meets her brother, Jacks, a stocky, sarcastic, big-hearted brute, and the pair show Jason what it's like to experience fear, pain, love, and joy. After Jason's human nature is awakened, he finds the ugly truth about his past and how the EOS has destroyed the humanity of everyone around him. As Reginald and Daniel grow suspicious of his recent behavior, Jason embarks on a dangerous mission that could destroy his grandfather's legacy and end the living eternal nature of every citizen.
