When cow Betsy meets her fate at the slaughterhouse, her son lives on-at least until he ends up dinner at a posh country club. The book has the appearance of a children's book, told in rhyme and complete with illustrations by Cleveland artist Cassie Hart. But parents should not be fooled- the book deals with some serious issues, including the treatment of cows in the production of milk and veal. Regarding the book, Mike Mannix writes, "For some the dark humor presented in the book will seem obnoxious and a bit self-indulgent. I would like to propose, however, that this humor has universal appeal and potentially serves as a point from which dialog around issues of vegetarianism and animal welfare can begin." If you like stark reality with your children's books--such as that not all cows are happy-- The Little Veal Cutlet That Couldn't may be for you.
