The writer of the previous review seems to have a chip on her shoulder about this book, which intrigued me, so I got a copy and quickly read it with great enjoyment. I think it is every bit as good as Mary Stewart's famous romantic suspensers and especially compares well to Stewart's Greece books, THIS ROUGH MAGIC, MY BROTHER MICHAEL, and THE MOON-SPINNERS. I can't imagine reading this and not wanting to take a trip to the Greek islands of Mykonos and Delos. The descriptive passages are wonderful, the suspense totally breathtaking, and it is filled with interesting archaeological information. I found it to be an adult romantic suspense book, nothing at all juvenile about it. And it does have a feminist viewpoint, yes, but that was popular in the early seventies when it was written, and greatly preferred to today's romantic suspense heroines who are too busy engaging in sex scenes and running like scared chickens from serial killers. If you are looking for Hitchcock-like thrilling suspense, this is for you. And don't miss the many other thrillers by this English author including HIGH HOSTAGE (Corfu) and THE WAY OF THE TAMARISK (Sicily).
