Elsie's day got off to a shafting bad start...She was surprised how much worse things could get, as it was they barely scraped by in the soot-filled ducts and vents of the massive space station. Before they can even scrounge for breakfast Elsie and Charlie-her best friend and partner in survival-are nearly killed, accused of murder and on the run. Not only are all levels of the space station on alert but the murder victim's master, the feared religious leader, Daniel, is searching for them...and not just for revenge. Caught up in politics and plots they don't understand, Elsie and Charlie try to do what they do best...endure. In the process they uncover secrets and expose truths that millions-if not billions-of lives depend on, including yours.Charlie and Elsie are passageway urchins who live in the lowest levels of a massive space station lost in space. They scrape by on their wits. Every day is a struggle to find enough to fill their bellies, let alone nourish their growing bodies. Talk to the wrong person or get caught and your risk reclamation. Even finding a place to sleep is a dance with danger. There are plenty of poor people, like them, who'd be happy to grab them in their sleep. After all an unregistered body is worth four credits at a reclamation station, alive or recently deceased. The morning of Elsie's sixteenth birthday starts off with a bit more adventure than she normally prefers, especially before coffee. After they wake up in the soot clogged shafts they often hide in to sleep. They stumble across a crawler-flying robots that no one will talk about-and then murder. At least they are accused of murder. Charlie's pretty sure it wasn't him. After all he only hit the temple goon once with that wrench. On the run, they hide out in the one place-on the massive space station-no one would expect. The temple the murdered acolyte once called home. Seeking refuge in the temple isn't their first bad decision that day and it won't be their last. Not that it matters. In a few days, it'll all be over. Charlie will be thrust back into the arms of the family he fled. Elsie won't believe where she came from, and the murder victim's master-the feared religious leader Daniel-will fulfill his mission. Well most of it at least. It's a shame about Elsie.Inspiration for The Light in Elsie's Eyes came while working with an NGO in northern Mozambique, where the poverty, corruption, and damage done to that society by external forces inspired many of the book's themes.
