Zeus the Almighty bulldog use to have a secret, he's a poodle. From puppyhood, he pretended to be the barbaric warrior of everyone's expectation. But, such behavior resulted in being chained outdoors like a heathen. An ill-mannered, no-class-having heathen! Yet, even amidst pure repulsiveness he continued to hide his organic claim to refinement and sophistication, the defining characteristics of poodles. Alas, such was an endeavor failed, a labor unproductive. Despite a valiant effort to cloak his true identity - sometimes even from himself - his private discomfort suddenly changed to public torment. A gathering of mutts spied him peeing on the wrong fire hydrant. In this dogmatic community, such deed no matter how innocent is an intolerable abomination, especially to Rex and Ralph the Rottweiler twins. The resulting barrage of attacks, humiliation and rejection eventually force Zeus to seek comfort from the homicidal dog catcher. For readers constrained by normality, the story ends there. For readers willing to thwart convention, the saga continues. By flipping to the back and reading inward, readers join Zeus on an arduous journey to self-appreciation. Unfortunately, his vast experience with intolerance doesn't apply to the barrage of new adversaries whose vices and wrongdoings are neither identity-driven or bigotry based. For Zeus, it's "damned if I is and damned if I ain't." Even so, perseverance is fruitful. Love's power blossoms from a pup whose plight is worse than Zeus'. Thereafter come awareness, determination and courage, all needed to save his only friend, not to mention his entire ungrateful community. Even as hostilities continue, his success produces happiness, confidence and pride.
