From the moment Abercrombie pulls the book from the fire, you're completely hooked
This is one of those rare stories that grips you instantly and doesn't let go. You know you're stepping into something extraordinary from page one. What follows is an emotionally rich and beautifully layered narrative . . . The writing is vivid and rich, the relationships authentic and full of tension, and longing. I was immersed from beginning to end into Abercrombie's world. An unforgettable tale of love, loss, and discovery. I can't wait to read what comes next

5.0 out of 5 stars: The Conformist meets Jules and Jim

Superb first novel. The high concept premise (the title character discovers a biography of his life...and death) propels the action forward, while the author elegantly weaves backstory throughout, creating its own momentum. The Italian setting is rendered in glorious detail and becomes integral to the story. The whole thing feels very cinematic, somehow: I was reminded of The Conformist and Jules and Jim. All in all, a gripping read with some beautifully observed moments of human connection amidst the conflict.

A gripping romantic thriller, very cleverly plotted with a properly satisfying conclusion. I liked the structure which goes back and forward in time, revealing layers of the story bit by bit. The settings, particularly the parts set in Naples, were really evocative and atmospheric, and I enjoyed the insights into 20th century Italian history - both real and imagined A really enjoyable read

I was captivated by the movements between the years and the rich narrative of the relationships that took me on the journey with them. Each chapter, in itself, a story, so powerfully written that it had me wanting to continue the journey . . . The unexpected twist at the end was a great, unpredictable surprise. I now miss Brio, Carla and Abercrombie, having felt a personal emotional connection to their story.
