The Libertarian Ideal: Self-Determination, Direct Democracy, and the Service State

The solution to the problems of the previous world order, with tyrannical rulers and despotic states, was the establishment of a decentralized, confederate republic ordered on the principles of inalienable individual rights and self-determination, constitutionally limited government and wide separation of powers, both vertically and horizontally. Democracy was to be used merely for administrative purposes within a larger framework of severely limited governmental power or within extremely decentralized local communities. This system, which found its purest expression in the American Revolution, and in the modern example of Liechtenstein, is the diametrical opposite of the authoritarian, centralized, bureaucratic, unconstrained, special interest, state-corporate, welfare-warfare mass democratic states of the modern era. Modern states are not an outgrowth of, but a specific repudiation and overthrow of the classical liberal ideal to which we must return. By returning to ideas rooted in the classical concept of liberalism we are able to develop a model that appeals to the various values of all members in society, while still maintaining a moral framework that promotes prosperity and freedom.
