This book is a great summer read. Set around the Washington, DC area, both in modern day times and in the Civil War Time period, the author draws you into the search for clues to figure out how and where one special Civil War soldier navigated the battles and events of his day, mingling with some good, some bad, some he loved and a few he despised. Its a chase to beat the clock, as his modern day descendent's future hangs on the balance of being able to prove they were related, and that he had been in certain places at certain times. All they have to work with are a few letters and pictures, and some research skills. The book is sprinkled with facts about actual Civil War battles and events (some interesting, some quirky) and snippets of what living day to day was like back then. This added dimensions makes gives the book it's special flavor, and is a great way to gain a bit of an understanding of the civil war, - even if you are history-challenged like me. The author's fascination with the civil war time period and with research is contagious, all the while he's taking his reader on a good old fashioned chase for the stars. He makes me wish I had letters of my own from "Fiddlers Green... "
